Richard Sherman is the New King of Trash Talk

Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman has accomplished a lot in his life. He’s escaped the mean streets of Compton, CA. He graduated high school with a 4.1 GPA, he’s a graduate of Stanford, and he’s now one of the most talented defenders in the NFL. Sherman is also one of the best trash talkers in the league. We are talking Michael Jordan and Gary Payton level. After his latest comments, Richard Sherman may be the King of Trash Talk.

It Doesn’t Matter

In the Seattle Seahawks victory over Washington, Sherman held wide receiver Pierre Garcon to just two receptions for 23 yards. After his  performance, Sherman told CSN Washington “Pierre doesn’t matter in this league.” Shots fired! When asked to clarify his comments by the media, a curt Sherman replied, “I mean exactly what I said.” You can watch Sports Illustrated’s coverage of the postgame comments here. It’s obvious Sherman is a WWE fan and has been studying Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s promos.

The war of words may have been led by Richard Sherman, but the Seahawks’ Monday night victory was led by quarterback Russell Wilson. Wilson rushed for a career-high 122 yards and a touchdown and completed 18 of 24 passes for 201 yards with two scores. The Seahawks (3-1) maintained their dominance in games played under the lights. Seattle is an NFL-best 21-8 on Monday nights, including nine wins in a row. The team is also 11-1 in prime time under Carroll.

Garcon Responds to Sherman

For his part, Garcon took the high road and avoided a war of words with the pugnacious cornerback. His reply to the Richard Sherman trash talk was…

The F&TS crew loved this sparring match. We love Sherman’s swag and hell we even liked Garcon’s reply. We do caution Sherman…he often plays more zone coverage than one on one against elite wide receivers. Sherman should thank his defensive coordinator and fellow Legion of Boom teammates instead of his own efforts. But good work on the smack talk. Please keep it up.
