Jets GM John Idzik Was the Subject of An Epic Mike Francesa Rant
You don’t ever want to get on the Pope of New York’s bad side. The New York Jets’ last 48 hours featured a humiliating loss to the Buffalo Bills (43-23), six turnovers, a botched return attempt, and pathetic press conferences by Head Coach Rex Ryan and General Manager John Idzik. The Pope of New York Sports finally had enough. Mike Francesa let loose an epic rant against the New York Jets on his WFAN afternoon-drive show that lasted eight minutes. Francesa was particularly incensed by Jets’ General Manager John Idzik. If you’ve never heard a Francesa rant about bad performances by New York sports teams, you’ve missed out. Mike Francesa’s opinions have changed the fortunes of New York sports team more than once.
Francesa said, “Idzik is clueless. The organization is a laughing stock.” He added, “What is Jets Nation, 42,000 empty seats?” Even if you are a hardcore Jets fan, it’s a must-watch and a must-listen.
Bad Game, Bad Post-Game Reactions
In the Bills victory, quarterback Kyle Orton was efficient and the Buffalo Bills’ defense opportunistic. The New York Jets were plain bad. Orton completed only 10 passes, but four were for touchdowns, while the Jets had six turnovers – three each by Geno Smith and Michael Vick. The Jets have lost seven in a row for the first time since Herm Edwards‘ final season as head coach. After the poor performances by his quarterbacks, Rex Ryan told the media he had no idea who would start against the Kansas City Chiefs next Sunday.
The Lost Jets Season
The New York Jets are 1-7. Second-year starting quarterback Geno Smith has been benched due to poor play. Manish Mehta, the Jets beat reporter for the New York Daily News wrote, “Geno Smith is not a franchise quarterback. [Smith] was yanked after throwing interceptions on three of the first four possessions. He’s thrown an interception in 19 of 24 career games, including seven this season. [The former WVU Mountaineer] has committed multiple turnovers in exactly half his games.”
Mehta added, the Jets’ secondary issues didn’t take long to crop up. Jets’ cornerbacks Darrin Walls and Antonio Allen made two huge mistakes on the Bills’ first possession. Walls was also beat on an 84-yard bomb to Sammy Watkins in the second quarter that was almost a touchdown. Watkins celebrated early and cost the Bills six points.
Francesa’s had a classic closing statement about Idzik. “The Jets just need to finish.” “No, you need to be finished.”
