Jets Bench Geno Smith for Michael Vick, But For How Long?

After a Sunday afternoon performance where the 1-4 New York Jets didn’t make it across the 50-yard line until 7:35 left in the fourth quarter, head coach Rex Ryan finally benched Geno Smith. Michael Vick replaced Smith in the second half of the New York Jets matchup against the San Diego Chargers. But Vick wasn’t that much more effective. He finished the game going 4-12 for 27 yards and an interception. That loud thud you heard is thousands of Jets’ fans pounding their furniture and screaming, it’s about freaking time.

Jets vs. Chargers Summary

San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers Rivers threw two touchdown passes to veteran tight end Antonio Gates and rookie running back Branden Oliver scored the first two NFL touchdowns of his career. The Chargers earned their first shutout of the season by defeating the Jets 31-0 on Sunday.

Rivers finished Sunday 20 of 28 for 288 yards and three touchdowns, with one interception. The Chargers’ last shutout victory was 31-0 against Kansas City on Dec. 12, 2010. The Jets were blanked for the first time since losing 34-0 against San Francisco on Sept. 30, 2012.

The Jets could not get anything going against Rivers and the Chargers. The Jets had only four first downs through three quarters. Rex Ryan after the embarrassing loss said, “First off, I apologize to our fans — those that are left,” coach Rex Ryan said. “This is on one person and that’s it. It’s certainly not on a quarterback and one individual that way. It’s on me. Clearly got outcoached. I thought we had a good plan going in and obviously, that wasn’t the case.”

Vick a Long Term Solution for Jets

The New York Jets continue to show their ineptitude. F&TS’ Richie “Dick” Burns reports Rex Ryan will start Geno Smith when the New York Jets take on the Denver Broncos. So long to Michael Vick as the Jets starter for now. Fantasy football owners, adjust your rosters accordingly, but if either Smith or Vick are on your rosters, we question your sanity.
