Modeling is in the Sears Family Tree
Wendy Martin, Sears’ great aunt inspired her to pursue modeling. Martin shared an appreciation for art and the female form with Sears at a young age. In turn, Sears wanted to pose for pictures reminiscent of the vintage pin-ups looks she had seen growing up. Australia’s highest-selling men’s magazine Zoo Weekly was the first magazine to feature Sears on its cover. The magazine’s editors asked her to write a regular advice column for the magazine because of how well her cover issue sold. Sears has graced fifteen magazine covers internationally to date. The ‘Shiela’ currently resides in Los Angeles and her portfolio now includes stunning pictorials for GQ, FHM, Maxim, and Motocross.

My great aunt Wendy Martin, taken by Helmut Newton (1950s) Wendy and my Grandma Pamela grew up in a country town in Victoria called Warracknabeal. When they were children, Wendy fell into the local creek and my Grandma, a tomboy and a strong swimmer, jumped in to save her. Wendy grew up to be discovered by Helmut Newton on Collins st. Melbourne, and became 1956 Australian model of the year. She moved to Los Angeles and lived here for over 40 years before she passed. My Grandma raised 4 daughters, one my mum Bronwyn, married my Dad and they both became successful art publishers, who raised my brother and sister and I surrounded by art, and artists. I will forever be grateful for coming from a family of strong, resilient women, and also from a family who celebrates and embraces art, expression and the human body. My unique family and the influence of all my relatives runs in my blood, is part of who I am and will always be unwavering in the face of angry, misguided and repressed people, who have not had the privilege of being taught to see the world with an open perspective.
Her U.S. Fame Leads to Memorable Experiences
One of the highlights of Sears’ early foray into acting and modeling was playing a vixen in the Kendrick Lamar ft. Dr. Dre video for “The Recipe.” In an interview about her experience in the video, Sears said, “Needless to say, meeting Dr. Dre was beyond surreal. Even to a white blonde Aussie dorky girl like me, he is a music legend. Kendrick Lamar was also super cool. He chatted with everyone – not just the bikini-clad babes, which I thought was really friendly and awesome.”
