NFL Top Plays, Week 2
TEs dominate Sunday games, both old and new.
Tight Ends are Lethal Weapons
Hats off to Antonio Gates of the Chargers. Today, Gates caught the 112th TD reception of his career. The catch broke the record for touchdowns by a tight end previously held by Chiefs great Tony Gonzalez. It’s our best highlight of Week 2. Beginning in San Diego and now in Los Angeles, Gates has been one of the most dynamic modern tight ends in the league. The ex-college basketball player at Kent State went undrafted and signed as a free agent with the Chargers in the early 2000s. Since 2003, Gates has used his basketball skills to become a lethal target down the field and in the end zone.

Gates and Tony Gonzalez’ success led to a new generation of tight ends. The position transformed from in-line blockers, who caught an occasional pass to dynamic playmakers you could split out wide. TEs such as Jimmy Graham, Rob Gronkowski, Martellus Bennett and Travis Kelce owe their careers to Antonio Gates. Coincidentally, Kelce has our No. 2 highlight of the week with his ‘Super’ leap into the end zone.
.@TKelce just jumped 5 yard line…
And landed in the END ZONE.
